Live in the Shadow
Psalm 36:7 How priceless is your unfailing love, O God! People take refuge in the shadow of your wings.
Psalm 36 (especially verses 5-12) is a beautiful Psalm of David. I’d encourage you to go and read the entire chapter. In the Psalm, David contrasts the wickedness of people around him to the greatness of God. In verse 7, David talks about the perfect love of God and then says, “People take refuge in the shadow of your wings.”
It’s a beautiful analogy of the character and strength of God. It brings to my mind several pictures that reassure me when life feels like too much.
It’s a picture of the size of God.
He’s immense. So immense that he casts a shadow that is big enough for all the people of the world that are willing can find refuge.
If you’re feeling small today... If you’re feeling overwhelmed and unnoticed, know that your God is big enough for both of you.
It’s a picture of the place of God.
He sits above it all. He overlooks it all. He sees the beginning from the end. He sees the totality of everything on the earth at one time. He sits outside of time, knowing what has been and what will be.
If you’re worried about the future today, know that he already knows it and is working on it. If you’re overwhelmed by your past today, know that he’s forgiven it and can redeem it.
It’s a picture of the power of God.
He’s the king. He’s seated on a throne above all and over all. He is never too weak. He never lacks what’s needed. In his hand is all power and strength.
If you feel weak today, know that he isn’t. If you feel powerless today, know that he has it. He is our strength.
The beautiful part of all this?
He loves you. He loves you and wants you to trust him. He has it all. In him we can take refuge. In him we can have confidence that he loves us, is always present, and always working.
Take refuge.
Under his power.
Under his instruction.
Under his grace.
Under his shadow.
