It’s Not That Far Away

John 2:6 — “Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons.”

It’s Jesus’ first recorded miracle.

He and His mother have been invited to a wedding.
During the wedding festivities, the wine runs out.

Now, this isn’t just an “oops, we miscalculated” kind of situation for this couple.
This is a big deal in New Testament culture.

Thankfully, Jesus was there.

So, Jesus’ mother calls Him over and essentially insists that He do something about it.

And He does!

The water jars are nearby, and He tells some servants to grab them and fill them with water.

They fill them to the brim and take them to the master of ceremonies.

Sure enough, the water turns into wine!

While it’s not a healing or a walking-on-water kind of story, it’s still a miracle.

But what I want you to notice is that small line I’ve read over so many times without thinking about it:

“Nearby stood six stone water jars.”

Here’s what I believe this can speak to us:

What has God placed nearby to help us in our trouble?

What has God placed near us that, while it seems ordinary, is positioned there for extraordinary purposes?

Here’s what I know about our God: He always resources our needs.

Did you catch that?

If you’re lonely…
If you’re scared…
If you’re burdened…
If you’re questioning…
If you’re doubting…
If you’re confused…

What’s nearby that may have been placed there by God to bring you through?

Maybe it’s a person.
Maybe it’s a new job.
Maybe it’s a new way of thinking.
Maybe it’s a new way of praying.
Maybe it’s something you’ve walked by dozens of times but always assumed was ordinary.

The miracle may not be as far away as you think.
