Resist the Urge

Isolation is the Devil’s playground.

It’s easy, right? To get into a place in our life and in our minds where we want to push other people away.

Maybe a few people have hurt you, so you push others away.

Maybe you’re running on fumes, so you don’t feel like you have anything to give.

Maybe there’s something you’d rather not share, so you shut down in front of others.

Maybe there’s a sin you’re battling, so you play it off so no one finds out.

Maybe you’re going through emotional pain, so you retreat because you don’t have the words to say.

There will be times for all of us that cause us to want to retreat and isolate.

The problem? God created you and me with the ideal of community.

Galatians 6:2 tells us to “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.”

In other words, what’s too heavy for you may be just the right size if you have someone helping you do the lifting. What’s overwhelming for you may be easier with someone else helping you along the way.

Resist the urge to isolate.

Those people around you. Those people you trust. Those people who speak kind words. Those people who speak tough words in love. Those people who ask the tough questions because they care. Those people who know the real you and love you anyway. They’re the ones you need.

Reach out. Call a friend. It’s better that way.
