Hate means to, “feel intense or passionate dislike for (someone).”
Wow! Doesn’t that sound like our country lately?
Left against right.
Red against blue.
Black against white.
No longer does society believe we can love someone and still disagree with them. Whether it’s a family member, long time friend, or complete stranger, disagreeing is becoming more and more synonymous with hating.
It’s sad, really.
It’s sad that we can’t disagree and still get along. That we can’t think differently and still love. That we can’t look different and still surround each other with love and care.
What’s even worse? The Church and the cross are often the scape goat for much of it. People try to justify their opinion by blaming it on Jesus. Some how, we as the Church have decided that not yelling at others we think are wrong is the same as doing it ourselves. We’ve decided if you’re wrong, I can’t just love you and stand by. I have to yell out my opinion instead.
How do we reverse it?
I don’t have all the answers, but I do know what I’ve been trying to do.
Check myself.
That’s all I can do. Where is that small amount of pride in me that tries to push others down? Where have I been vocal about something that really doesn’t matter that much? Where do I need to remember that just because it isn’t my way doesn’t mean it’s wrong?
