So, everything is good for Adam and Eve, right.
They’re in a beautiful place.
They’re walking with God.
They’re in a place of pure bliss.
Then, out of nowhere, the Tempter comes and Eve buys the lie. Not only does she buy the lie, but she gets Adam to bite (literally) as well.
Then, in Genesis 3:7, we read,
Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.
Now, many times when we read this, we make some sort of joke about how they were naked and all of a sudden they had to put their clothes on, and how that was bad for Adam. However, there’s so much more to this story.
There are a host of things we could say about this moment in history. One big take away is that that they tried to “earn” their way back to God by covering their own sin and that an animal would have to be sacrificed just a few verses later to make the coverings that God provided. Ultimately, that sacrifice would be Jesus who makes it so we never have to “earn” our covering again.
There’s another takeaway, though, that I don’t think I’ve necessarily ever connected until a few weeks ago.
Sin removes the covering and leaves us vulnerable.
Sin is our choice to step outside of the covering God offers us and it causes us to feel vulnerable, uneasy, and scared. That’s why when I tell a lie, I worry someone will find out. That’s why if I stole something, I’d be concerned and paranoid someone would notice.
Sin leaves us in a vulnerable state away from the covering God offers us.
Because of that, I realize true freedom only comes from Christ and walking with Him. His commands and love don’t restrict me, but keep me from being exposed.
What God commands ultimately leads to what I truly desire, freedom and a place of refuge.
It can be really easy for us to pull what Eve did and wonder about the commands of God and wonder if it’s really worth keeping or really that big of a deal.
The truth?
Sin exposes us and restricts us from walking in the true freedom God has for us. That IS a big deal!
