In leadership, God’s Spirit will lead you, hard work will define you.

You aren’t the LEADER

When leading from a spiritual leadership perspective, one of the most comforting things we can come to terms with is that fact that we aren’t the LEADER. We’re leading the operation, the corporation, business, or church ministry, but we aren’t the leader. Sure, we’re the physical representation of what God is doing and people look to us as the leader, but we have to be led by the Spirit ourselves.

This means that we’re not always doing what makes sense, or what seems best. We’re being led by the One who sees the big picture even when our world seems hopeless or the organization seems in disarray. As a leader, we’re going to get inclinations (if we’re listening) that don’t make sense. We have to follow those. We have to lead by the Spirit and for people. That’s our call.

Take a deep breath, you aren’t alone, leader…. heck, you aren’t even the main LEADER.

Hard WORK

Ultimately, a leader is someone who gets it done. I have recently made the statement several times that I thoroughly believe that if you’re someone who simply does what they say they’re going to do 90% of the time, you immediately become more reliable and more valuable to your organization than 95% of people (did you know that 99% of stats are made up?). It’s true as a leader. We have to be people of integrity that do what we say we’re going to do and that are willing to actually work. This means we don’t just point out directions, but we take hold of the wheel and actually steer the boat. This means that we take action even if it may not be “our job.”

A leader works. They see things that need to be done and get them done. Now, don’t get me wrong, a leader has to manage time and delegate well, but even in that, they have to get it done.

So many people stop short of being good leaders because they don’t want to put any legs to their planning and vision and and ideas.

Ideas are only good inclinations without action as a follow up.

Define You

Ultimately, we are defined by success. How well we lead, how much we invest in others, what happens to our department or organization while we’re at the helm. Those things define us as leaders and our leadership.

Being hard at work for Jesus and by the leading of the Holy Spirit – that leads to success. They are what lead to our legacy and our visions being accomplished.
