3 Twitter Twules

As I make my way through my twitter stream and as I send out tweets myself, I’ve come to realize that there are some unwritten rules to twittering. These rules won’t get your account suspended or cause people to necessarily unfollow you, but they will help you make better connections with people.

1. Don’t be a quote bot.

A quote here and there is fine, but seriously, don’t just pump out quotes all day, everyday. If the people that follow you really wanted a list of quotes everyday, they’d google “great famous quotes”, not follow you on twitter. Quotes keep you from really connecting. People never learn who you really are, just that you can copy and paste. If you’re really into quotes, create an account and make it obvious your on twitter to post quotes.

2. Avoid broad statements.

You probably don’t know everyone in your following list personally or well. Don’t make broad statements that are going to cause people to fall or stumble. I know we can’t tell people how to take what we say, but we can guard against it a little. Remember, tweets must be short, but also precise.

3. Connect before pimping.

If you’re asking me to push your book, service, or blog but you’ve never even @ replied me, I’m probably not going to do it. Sure, certain people can get away with it. Some have that platform, but most of us don’t. That’s why it’s important to really connect with your followers. If you’re really connected, they’ll push your stuff because they believe in you.

5 Twitter Tips From A Twitter Tweep

Twitter can be a tough world to learn and command, so with that in mind,
Here are a few tips for those of you who may need them…

1. Have a profile picture.

We don’t want to see the Twitter egg when we’re thinking about following you. We want to see… you! Twitter is about connecting, the first part of that is seeing your face.

2. Fill out the profile information.

There’s a lot of spam on Twitter. Many of those spammers have no profile information at all or just have a link. You don’t have to reveal much, just enough so that we know it’s really you.

3. Tweet regularly.

Keep your twitter stream updated. If you have 2,000 followers and only 10 tweets, we’ll immediately think something’s up. Update you twitter stream if you want to utilize twitter.

4. Respond to people.

I know it can be impossible to respond to all replies/DM’s, but unless you’re a celebrity, reply to people when it’s appropriate. You don’t have to say something every time, but definitely sometime.

5. Tweet others as you’d want to be tweeted.

Don’t send random links to people or try to get people to read your stuff if you never mention them otherwise. Also, try to be positive when responding to people. As our Moms always said, “If you can’t tweet anything nice, don’t tweet anything at all.”

5 Reasons I Tweet

I dove head first into Twitter a few months ago.
Since then, I’ve really gained an appreciation for the opportunities that social media provides.

Here are the top 5 reasons  why I give my time to Twitter…

1. I’m able to impact the lives of people I would have never been able to meet without it.

Twitter has allowed me to have conversations with, email correspondance with, and phone conversations with people that are all around the world. Without Twitter, I would have never been able to give these people an encouraging word or open their curiosity to Christ.

2. I’m impacted by people that I would have never have had a chance to meet without Twitter.

The things that I learn and the insights that I gain while reading through my Twitter stream are inspiring, educational, and thought provoking. I can honestly say that I’ve learned more on Twitter than in some seminary classes. :)

3. It teaches me to write and think with clarity.

When you’re limited to 140 characters in a statement, you have to be brief and clear. The person reading my tweet probably has never met me and has no idea how I think or what I’m like. I have to be crystal clear when tweeting so I’m not misunderstood. It’s helped me think and speak clearly consistently.

4. Connecting with people helps me think through things.

Sometimes, I have to talk my way through thoughts and ideas. I’ve tweeted a brief thought and been able to get a better picture of the throught through the discussion it’s caused on Twitter.

5. The relationships I form.

I’ve met some great people on Twitter. These are people that, 5 years ago, I would have never been able to know. In fact, I sometimes begin to feel like I actually know some of the people I follow.

So, why do you tweet?
