The Days After

Christmas is over.

The Christmas Eve services have concluded.

The presents are unwrapped.

The stockings are empty again.

The food is gone (well, most of it).

The season is feeling like it’s over.

But we can never forget…

What it all means.

Just because the 25th has come and gone,
don’t quit living like Jesus came to a manger,
died a death He didn’t deserve,
and rose from the grave.

If it’s just something we celebrate one day out of the year, we have failed the One we celebrate.

Christmas isn’t over,
because He’s still ALIVE!

A Baby Changes Everything

I’m not a parent yet, but I’ve heard the stories of how a newborn baby completely changes their parents’ lives as soon as they’re born.

The parents’ priorities change, their time schedules change, their budgets change, their focus changes.
All of a sudden they have the responsibility of a human life other than their own.

A newborn baby changes everything.

Luke 2:12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.

And so, Jesus changed EVERYTHING.

The religious system.
The inescapable punishment for our sins.
The course of human history.
The concept of true love.
The end of the world.
The hope of the world.

A baby changes everything…
In Jesus’ case, He changed the world!

Jesus Ain’t My Homeboy

When I was growing up, I always had a lot of friends.

Some of these friends were really close.
They were the ones that I spent most of my time with and loved being around.

Some of these friends were more casual.
They were the ones that I saw at school and occasionally hung out with outside of school.

When I would decide that I wanted to do something and wanted a friend to go with me,
I’d always call my close friends first.

Only after all of them seemed to already have something going on would I call my other friends.

It seems like a lot of people treat Jesus as “the other friend.”

Sometimes, I treat Jesus as my “other friend.”

We’re willing to pay some attention to Him on an occasional Sunday.
We’re willing to admit that He’s our friend.
We’re even willing to call on Him when all other options fall through.

BUT,

He isn’t our life.

He’s just a casual friend.

Jesus never died on a cross and got up from the grave to be our casual friend.
Jesus never died on a cross and got up to be someone to come to when all other options seem unavailable.

Jesus’ love demands our life.
Jesus’ sacrifice demands our life.
Jesus’ atonement demands our life.

I never want Jesus to be a casual friend to me.
I never want Jesus as my “homeboy.”

I want Jesus to be MY LIFE.
More today than yesterday…
More tomorrow than today…

He demands my firsts, not my leftovers.
He demands my  priority, not my remainder.

In every part of my life…

My family.
My work.
My finances.
My leadership.
My ministry.
My leisure.

I must be last!
He must be first!

Don’t Just Mend Your Net

Matthew 4:21-22 And going on from there he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and he called them. Immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.

When I was a senior in high school, like many others, I struggled with where I should go to college.
I knew that I wanted a four year degree, but I also knew that I wasn’t ready to leave home.

So, I ended up attending a technical college for a year with a plan to go a second year as well.
As the end of my first year came, I began to believe that God wanted me out of the house and into the 4 year school I had chosen.

To be honest, I didn’t care much…
I wasn’t ready to leave home.

During the summer of that year, a lady from my church came up to me and said,
“Jonathan, I appreciate all you do here, but I really believe it’s time for you to go away and learn how to do it even better.”

WOW!

I knew what I had to do.
God had spoken it to me, now He used someone else to confirm it.

You see, I knew what I was doing wasn’t what God had for me.
I knew that even though I was planning on going and becoming a pastor,
I wasn’t exactly where God wanted me.

James and John had the same kind of experience in this passage…

They were doing what they always did.
Hanging out with their Pops, doing the family business.

BUT,

Notice that they were trying to mend their nets.
Some translations say “Preparing their nets.”

Something just wasn’t quite right about where they were and what they were doing.
They were prepared for something different.

What they were doing wasn’t bad, it just wasn’t godly.
It was mediocre, not miraculous.
It was a living, but not really LIVING.

So, Jesus called…
And they answered.

They were willing to leave everything they knew.
Everything they were comfortable with.

If you feel like something isn’t quite right about where you are,
no matter how “good” or “acceptable” it may be,
seek God.

We usually know what His calling is and why we feel a little uneasy about what we’re doing.

We just have to do it.
We have to quit doubting it’s really Him speaking and do what He called and equipped us to do.

I’m glad I did.
I met my wife at the 4 year University.
I graduated.
I was prepared  for God’s next place.

Don’t just sit around mending your net…

Obey the call.
Follow Christ.
