Sleeping without Living

Do we know the win?

Do we know the goal?

Do we know what success looks like?

It’s really easy for us to go through the motions…

of life,
of ministry.

It’s really easy for us to get up every morning, put our clothes on, walk out the door, and get another pay check.

BUT,

If that’s all it is to us,
we’ve missed the point.

A lot of people are sleep walking their way through life,
sleep walking their way through ministry,
sleep walking their way through leadership.

While they may be somewhat comfortable,
they never wake up to the reality of their real purpose.

They’ve forgotten the goal,
they’ve forgotten what the end result of their hard work really is.

The result of these people’s actions really isn’t a lot.

Sure, they make money, accomplish tasks, and even feel like their doing what they’re supposed to do from time to time.

But in the end,
they’ve forgotten the true calling that God has on their life.

They’ve lost the enthusiasm and the zeal that they once had to make a difference and to lead people to Christ.

I think a lot of us fit into the boat too often.

Truth is,
The end result is bigger than ourselves.

The goal to life,
one lived with a call from God,
is to help people find Him.
To help people grow in Him.

That’s the call of a Christian.

If we simply go through the motions of life and ministry all the while forgetting what the win really looks like, we will never have it.

I’m gonna try to live with the purpose in mind.
I’m gonna do all I can to minister to people with a real goal at the forefront of my mind.

How about you?

In your life.
In your job.
In your family.
In your ministry.

Never Let Apathy Win

The greatest threat facing the local church isn’t from any outside source, but rather the sheer apathy of those inside the church.

I’ve made this statement several times over the last few days.

I really believe that churches today are filled with people just going through the motions of church and the Christian life.

Some of us have been raised in church, we know it as “the right thing to do,” but have quit believing that it can have any real impact on us or the world.

Others have been sitting in churches so long, that they’ve lost their desire to be sold out to the cause.

The result?

We’ve made church about something we attend rather than something we are.
We’ve made church about surviving rather than thriving.
We’ve made church about maintaining ground rather than conquering ground for Christ.

The stakes are high for the church.
Life and death are truly at stake.
Our spiritual growth and  effectiveness are hanging in the balance.

We can’t continue to let apathy be our reason for decline.
We must make new ground.
We must be willing to adapt and blaze new trails.

Don’t let apathy overcome effectiveness.

3 Things I Know

I’m a pretty young dude.

In fact, I’ve been called a “young whipper-snapper” recently.

I have, however, lived life 23 years.

It’s hard to live even that long without learning a few things along the way.

So, here are 3 things that I know.

I hope you already know them as well!

1. God’s grace is enough!
Seriously, that’s all it takes. Nothing more, nothing less. Just His grace, amazing love for His people, and our trust in that grace. I’ve spent portions of my life trying to earn this great grace, but have come to find that it’s impossible. In fact, all I’ve ever done is cheapen His grace by thinking that I can some home measure up, some how do enough.

2. Love compels action!
When I realize that someone loves me, I’m compelled to love them back. I’m convinced, that if we really ever get a glimpse of how much Christ loves us, we can’t do anything but love Him back. Sure, we’re not going to be perfect, but love is going to be an overriding motivation for our lives.

3. The greatest way to love God and love others is to help others know God!
It may sound simple, but we often miss it. We take the grace of God like it’s a gift to us that we can never give to others. God’s love compels our love toward Him and to others (Matthew 22:36-40). With our daily life and our love toward Christ, we should be helping others see Him.

So, I don’t consider myself that smart.
In fact, there’s probably a typo or badly structured sentence in this post.

But, I do know a few things.

These just may be enough!

What is something that you “know?”

Come On Now

Last Friday, I went to get my eyes checked for the first time in…
too long!

As I was getting fitted for glasses and getting checked out, the lady at the front desk noticed my occupation.

She was asking me a little about it and then said something that’s been stirring in me since I heard it…

“I don’t go to church, I do believe in God. A pastor told me a few days ago that in order for me to know Jesus, I need to have a good understanding of the Bible and what was happening in history at the time it was written.”

WHAT?!

Are there really people out there that believe that?

Are there really people leading our churches and people that believe that Jesus is really that hard to accept?

After thinking through this a little, I’ve come to this conclusion…

The more I learn about the Bible and Jesus, the more simple I realize it really is.

Sure, studying scripture is always a good thing.
It helps you know your faith better and helps us glean wisdom that can only come for in-depth study.

But, to know Jesus, it only takes one thing…
FAITH.

That’s it.
Nothing more.
Nothing less.

Please don’t make following Christ about anything but what Jesus has done for you!

(Of course, I cleared this up with the lady that asked the question. No, she didn’t accept Jesus, but I think she got closer.) :-)

Put Up or Shut Up

Here’s a question that I’ve been asking myself lately…

What does it mean to follow Christ?

Now, I know that there are some typical answers to this question,
but they’ve really become more “church talk” than an actual lifestyle.

Here are a few practical examples of what following Christ look like when put into action…

  • Loving people that seem to not deserve and love.
  • Reaching out to help even when it seems to be really inconvenient.
  • Making Jesus a part of every part of our lives.
  • Not being afraid to step out on faith.
  • Really believing and LIVING as if nothing else matters.
  • Keeping eternity at the forefront of our minds.
  • Believing and LIVING like there is a literal hell.
  • Giving it all in determination to show others that they are important.

Luke 9:23 “Then he said to them all: “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.”‘

Your thoughts…

What’s it mean to be a Christ follower?
