Don’t Miss The Forest For The Trees

and you do not have his message in your hearts, because you do not believe me—the one he sent to you. “You search the Scriptures because you think they give you eternal life. But the Scriptures point to me! Yet you refuse to come to me to receive this life. (John 5:38-40 NLT)

Don’t miss the forest for the trees.

It’s one of those old sayings that mean something along the lines of, “Don’t lose sight of what’s important or what you have because of what’s not important or what you don’t have.”

I’ve heard that all my life.

That’s kind of what Jesus is telling the Pharisees in John 5. He’s saying, “Look, don’t look at what’s supposed to point you to me but miss me because you fall in love with it. You’re selling yourself short.”

In leadership, we’ve heard the statement, “Major on the Majors.”

It means that we take seriously the important things and spend time on what matters.

That’s what Jesus is saying here to us.

It’s really easy as a Christian to get caught up in the rules and miss the Savior.
It can be easy for us to focus on ministry and miss the reason for the ministry.

For leaders, it can be easy to concentrate on the petty issue and ignore the overall vision.
It’s easy to concentrate on the process and miss the people.

Don’t miss the forest for the trees.

Always return to what matters.
