Why Are You Afraid?

afraid

And he said to them, “Why are you afraid, O you of little faith?” Then he rose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm. (Matthew 8:26 ESV)

“Why are you afraid?”

The disciples had seen the past work of Jesus. They had been there for the miracles that he had done. Yet, when it came to something beyond their control yet so in God’s Son’s control, they panicked. To make matters worse, it’s like they were surprised later on in the text when they said,

The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!” (Matthew 8:27)

Shouldn’t they have kind of anticipated that the Christ who healed, promised to raise from the dead and would eventually feed a ton of people on a fish sandwich could control the waves too?

Yet, they were afraid instead.

They had God himself in their boat but trembled with fear when things got rocky. They quickly forgot who they had on their side.

Jesus saves.

He saved the disciples that tough day on the water. This foreshadows what he would ultimately do, but it also proves to me that I can look in the past and see my help for now.

Why are you fearful?
Why do I fear?
Why do we all let a few large waves and a little fast wind worry us and make us doubt?
Can’t we all recall the times God’s been there for us in the past?

If we believe Jesus for our eternity’s security, can’t we trust him for the now?

For the next wave that pops up in life?

Jesus is with me and is ready at the perfect time to call out the waves.

He’s there for you too!
