1 Timothy 1:5 (ESV) The aim of our charge is love that issues from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith.
What a beautiful truth.
This verse really sums up the Christian walk doesn’t it? That we would love from a pure heart and a good conscience. That we would have a real and sincere faith that trusts God and causes us to love others through the love to Jesus.
But look at what comes just before this verse…
…stop those whose teaching is contrary to the truth. 4 Don’t let them waste their time in endless discussion of myths and spiritual pedigrees. These things only lead to meaningless speculations, which don’t help people live a life of faith in God.
(1 Timothy 1:3-4 NLT)
How often do we miss love and pure faith because we’re spending our time as those people that were trying to fight for what they believed was “right?” That’s who Paul’s speaking of when he says “those whose teaching is contrary to the truth.”
You see, you and I often get caught up in…
- Our personal agendas
- What we think is right
- Minor stuff that we make major
- Small problems that don’t matter in the grand scheme
I can’t help but believe that the people that were perverting the truth in Paul and Timothy’s times started with what they thought was right… heck, they probably believed it until the day they died.
They lost love and faith in the meantime.
For you and I, let’s remember the “aim of the charge…”
If we miss the aim for the sake of the extra, we’ve missed it all.
