3 Things Great Young Leaders Forget

As a young leader, there are so many things that I need to learn. I don’t have the life experience or the leadership experience that many have. I’m always seeking to grow in who I am and in my leadership. However, there are some things that I believe myself and all young leaders need to forget. Some things that we need to put out of our minds so that we can lead and impact people the way we’re called to.

Here are 3 things great young leaders forget…

Their age is supposed to determine their position

I really do believe that young leaders often approach their jobs and their leadership without the boldness that they should because they’ve been told that they’re too young to hold high position in their church, organization, or company. While I agree that young leaders don’t just need to be handed positions, I do believe they deserve a fair shot. If they have a track record and have influence, young leaders shouldn’t be put down just because of their age.

They should always look out for themselves

We all know those young leaders and people in general that are always looking out for their selves. In fact, I’ve been given the advice that, “If you don’t do what’s best for you, you’re going to get into a mess.” Young leader, that isn’t true. Sure, you don’t want to put yourself in a position to fail, but we have to make decisions and serve people with the belief that what we do is about and for them. I forgot who I heard say it, but they said, “There should be no such thing as servant leadership, if you aren’t a servant, you aren’t leading.” That’s true for all of us.

Their pride

Young leaders (and leaders in general) can be prideful people. Pride doesn’t lead well. People aren’t influenced over a long period of time by prideful leaders. People want to follow someone that they believe cares about others and isn’t always thinking about themselves. Lay down your pride and pick up hard work and honor.
