Beauty in A Gas Station Bathroom

A few months ago, Melissa and I went on a fairly long day trip. We were driving up the interstate and stopped to go to the bathroom. Not being able to get a look at the gas stations on the exit before getting off the interstate, we tried to make do and go to the gas station that would seem to have the cleanest restroom.

The station we chose wouldn’t have been at the top of anyone’s “clean” rating if it had any competition on the exit. It wasn’t new, big, or even really clean. It was a typical, middle of the interstate, country gas station.

After refueling, I walked inside to use the restroom. As I walked down the short hall to the restroom, I noticed a lady that worked there with a mop bucket. She had just finished cleaning the men’s and was about to start on the women’s restroom. I spoke to her and went on in. As I opened the door to the restroom, I was shocked at how spotless it was. It may have been cleaner than mine at home.

After using the restroom, I opened the door and found the lady to compliment her on the job she had just done. Here’s what it all means for me…

My perceived importance of the job at hand shouldn’t dictate my effort. No matter what I do, I can do it with excellence.

Regardless of how small it may seem or how low on the totem poll I may feel, I can do what I do with passion and with excellence.

No job is too small.
No job is too low.

Everything I do, I can do to the best of my ability.

So can you.

1 Corinthians 10:31 – So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.

  2. My friend Verne Harnish once told me “how you do anything is how you do everything” – if you want to be good at the “big” things, it helps to practice on the smaller things http://conorneill.com/2011/02/04/how-you-do-anything-is-how-you-do-everything/
