How to Communicate to Real Humans

I don’t know where the breakdown has happened, but I get more and more communication from people that don’t really seem to be talking to humans. What they send or say is rude and full of demands. I understand that typed communication isn’t the same as face to face communication. I understand that some people are busy and have little time to respond to email, tweets, and text messages. I can’t understand, though, why some people feel that it’s ok to communicate without any recognition of who they’re talking to or without regard for the interest of the person they’re communicating with.

I’m here to help. Here are 3 things to remember when communicating with humans…

Be concise

Yes, respect people’s time. Don’t go on and on with unnecessary details. Get to the point. Spread out the information so it can be easily scanned. Help the people you’re communicating with to move onto the next things as soon as possible. Be brief.

Be clear

Be to the point, but cover the point. When typing or communicating without seeing a person face to face, we lose certain indicators that usually come as a resort of facial expression and body language. It’s that much more important that we’re clear in what we’re saying. This immediately makes the person on the other end feel at ease. When we understand, we’r more confident and less defensive.

Be cordial

Here’s where most people get it wrong. Be polite. Wish the person on the other end of that email a good day. Sure, it may be small talk, but they’re people. They’re dealing with stuff in their life. Regardless of what arena you’re in, be polite and cordial. Think before you hit send. We’re all in the same boat in life. Help make others’ day better.

What do you think? Is this important, or am I just being too ideal and picky? What do you see when you communicate with people?
