The Leader Isn’t Always The Most Talented

Leading can be a weighty calling. The pressure of being responsible for a vision and being responsible for people can often be plenty of pressure in and of itself.

Couple those pressures with the idea that the leader is always the most talented, and leadership can feel like a calling that just isn’t worth it.

The good news, however, is that, as a leader, you don’t have to be the most talented. It’s completely okay to have people around you that are better at doing what you do. It’s completely okay to be in a position where those around you can far exceed your ability.

In fact, that’s the real definition of leadership.

Real leaders lift others above themselves.

Leader: You don’t have to be the most talented.
Leader: You shouldn’t be the most talented.

No matter what you’re leading, you don’t have to be the smartest, the oldest, the most creative or most talented one.

You have to be the one called by God to lead.
You have to be the one that is willing to invest in people and move things forward.
You have to be someone that cares about people, not just a destination.

That’s you.

Thank you for writing this blog! Too many leaders forget God brings them people for a reason. It’s usually because they have a skill set, talent, or wisdom the leader does not possess. We must also never get so caught up in our own vision that we forget God has given others a vision also.

    1. Definitely. God equips the body. Thanks, Karen

  2. Thankfully leaders don’t have to be the most talented! Good leaders surround themselves with good people. Taking on the attitude of a servant will allow you to have greater influence, and demonstrate a great example to others.

    1. Well said. I’m glad too. I thought of this post while watching basketball last weekend. They mentioned that one of the bench guys was one of the ‘leaders’ on the team. He didn’t play the most or play the best, but he was still the leader. True in all facets of leadership. Thanks, David.
