It Ain’t Wrong, But It Ain’t Right

“If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.” – Genesis 4:7

It’s completely possible to do something that isn’t wrong, but it not be right either.

In Genesis 4:7, Cain had given an offering to God, he had done a right act.
But, he didn’t do the right thing.

It’s possible that you or I aren’t really doing anything wrong, but we aren’t doing anything right either.

Maybe we aren’t committing a whopping sin that the person that lives down the street from us is, but we also aren’t doing anything that God’s calling us to do either.

What I believe?

Sometimes God honors our wrong action more than our subtle disobedience.

Ultimately, God desires that I live a life of boldness, reckless obedience, and purpose for Him…
Not a safe life of perfection.

God wants me to be a tool, not a trophy (I wrote more about this here).

I’m trying my best not to be a Cain.

I don’t want to avoid doing something wrong,
I want to do what God says is right.

What are you not doing now that God’s calling you to do?

  1. Great post. Didn’t have to think too hard or too long about this: I am NOT demonstrating the love of Christ to a few people in my extended family who have been hurtful to me. It’s so much easier to just ignore them, yet time and time again, God has asked me to be a tool for Him in their lives.

    1. Good one. Hope you have a great week!

  2. I’m not reading the Word. I know I need to do it and probably get up earlier to do it, but I just don’t. I realize that my knowledge of it just shows flat-out disobedience, but I don’t do anything about it. That just makes me more mad at myself and more guilty. Ugh!

For what I am doing, I do not understand; for I am not practicing what I would like to do, but I am doing the very thing I hate. Romans 7:15

    1. Yeah. Definitely think a lot of Christians fall into this same trap. Romans 7:15 proves that. Praying you get into the rhythm of it. Thanks for sharing, Sandy!

  3. I have run away from what God has called me to do for most of my Christian life, choosing instead to live a life of ” not quite so safe perfection ” for to be apart from God’s specific will is dangerous: Just ask Jonah

    1. Good point. Thanks for sharing.

  4. I have a post scheduled for Wednesday that goes more into depth about this, but this past weekend I made the decision to fully commit to raising missions support to focus on Ignite full time – and travel to other colleges and other countries more regularly. It’s a scary step, but something I have been hesitating on for months.

    1. GO FOR IT! That’s exciting man!

      1. Exciting and a bit scary, but it will be well worth it once I’m fully funded!

  5. Developing Mustard Seed Year into a full time ministry. Being out of work since March and not able to pay bills I’m just paralyzed by trying to find ways to keep a roof over my head. The financial stress is killing me and it’s keeping me in neutral.

    1. Wow. Yeah, sounds like it’s been a really tough time. Praying you can take the leap and that God blesses it!

  6. Your post reminded me of a Francis Chan quote I like, “It is true that God may have called you to be exactly where you are. But, it is absolutely vital to grasp that he didn’t call you there so you could settle in and live your life in comfort and superficial peace.”

    1. Wow. Yeah. Great quote!
