Vigor for the Voice

by

The amount we desire to hear someone reflects how highly we value that person.

A few weeks ago, I was sitting at home reading tweets on my phone when a phone call came in. I checked out the number and saw that it wasn’t someone from my contacts. After pausing for a few seconds to decide if I was gonna answer it, I decided to hit the ‘answer’ button.

It was a lady from the Gallop Poll.

She was extremely nice and asked if I’d give some of my time to take part in their survey. Feeling like I’d be helping her out, I agreed.

About 5 minutes into the conversation, another call came through. I checked to see who it was and noticed that it was my wife.

Not thinking twice, I told the Gallop Poll lady to call back later. I switched to my wife’s phone call.

Why?

Because I value my wife more than the lady with the Gallop poll.

The amount we desire to hear someone reflects how highly we value that person.

I can’t overstate the importance of us leaning close to God and hearing what He has to say.

Of opening up scripture and reading about His promises.
Of taking time out of our day to talk with and hear Him.
Of making it a priority in our lives to get close to Him

We can make time for what’s really important to us.

If we value Him the way we say we do, we must desire to spend time with Him.

We have to have vigor to hear His voice.

Vigor to read His word.
Vigor to know Him deeper.

Where do you go to hear from God?

  1. Love the idea here Jonathan. With everything that is calling to us today, ti gets harder to hear His voice. But just like your wife’s voice took priority to a solicitor, our ear must give priority to the voice of God. Where do i go? You have stated the obvious. I also try to listen to counsel from others if i am seeking direction.

    1. Well said, Bill.

  2. So very true! We need to hang up on those “calls” that keep us away from our Father and zone in on His voice!

    1. I agree Sandy. We hit ‘ignore’ a lot and never get back to answering.

  3. It’s interesting I should read this today. The Lord’s been reminding me lately about the need to seek Him more and stop striving so much. I need to listen to His voice first before jumping into action. Thanks for this.

    1. yes. you do! :) So do I!! Thanks for sharing, Eileen.

  4. Great reminder! The statistics of Christians who read the Bible is always overwhelming to me. And my problem is using God’s word for what I want it to be to me instead of listening to what He has to say to me. Where do I have to go to hear from God? Away from my own desires and selfishness. Thanks for this.

    1. it really is crazy how few ‘Christians’ read the Bible… not good.

  5. Hi Jonathan. I must admit that at this point, I am losing that vigor and spend less time praying than I used to. I feel like a hypocrite right now telling the whole world that I am a Christian but not living the values of one. I guess I needed to be reminded of that vigor and I feel blessed to have stumbled upon your post.

Great reminder, Jonathan! God bless! :-)

    1. Glad it inspired you, Irene. I think it’s important that you don’t beat yourself up over it, but just change it. Start right now. Thanks so much for stopping by and sharing. Praying for you!

  6. This is such an important point. Many things can block us from hearing God but the key is to reline our priority’s and have Him first in our life. Great post.

  7. Good word today, man. Plus, I’m always looking for excuses to hang up on people I don’t know that call me on the phone. :)

    1. haha… There ya go!

Have been learning lately about how much the Bible tells us to love others and that if we really love God then we will obey His commands. Such a challenge to love others when the world way of thinking tells us otherwise!

    1. I agree. Thanks for saying that. Appreciate you reading.

  9. I love the analogy – and it’s one I’ve used quite a few times with my college students. It’s so important to desire His voice above all others, and to take that time to learn His voice and actually listen to it.

I tend to hear Him most when I’m out of my normal surroundings – so when I go to Czech, or go for a walk, or usually right before I go to sleep at night.

    1. I’m the same way. When I’m in a different and quiet place.

  10. Yet so many of listen to every other voice available

    1. Yep. Guilty here too.
