Thinking Outside the Inside of the Box

When it comes to being creative or planning strategies or practices, you often hear the words, “You’ve gotta think outside the box.”

I completely understand the heart behind the “outside the box” statement.

It’s meant to stretch us,
to challenge our thinking.

But….

While attempting to think outside the box, we often abandon the inside of the box.

What I mean is that we forget about the basic principles that we have always lived by in an attempt to do something new.

We try to get creative in reaching more people,
forgetting that relationships have always been key.

We attempt to create a new environment,
forgetting that it’s ultimately about following what God says.

We try to dream up new ways of making income,
and slack up at our current job.

So the result is that we have a great new plan but often leave out the foundational principles that we must hold onto in order to be successful.

Don’t abandon the inside of the box while looking around the outside.

Your thoughts or experiences??

  1. Right on the money Jonathan!! No program can nor should ever take the place of relationship.

  2. You are right that we cannot forget our principles. Solid stuff. Evidently you and I both have problems with boxes today. :)

    1. haha… looks like it. Great minds…… :)

  3. Pretty solid brother. I have been preaching (to friends) that relationships are a key part of God’s plans for us. Don’t loose site of that!

    1. Amen. Trying to remember that!

  4. Very true!

    1. Thanks, Brandon!

  5. I’ve looked outside the box, and have found I want nothing it has to offer. It’s what’s inside the box that counts for me. Happy Thursday! :)

    1. haha… happy thursday, Larri!

  6. Hi Jonathan, nice post my friend.

My new blog called “out of box” and I’m thinking: “Don’t abandon the inside of the box while looking around the outside.”

    Nice job!
    God bless you.

    1. wow. Weird. Once again, great minds…….

  7. It’s not the box, really – it’s what’s in it… sometimes we can get so attached to the box that we don;t realize we don;t really need it at all.

    1. well put and great thought!

  8. I’ve never thought of it that way, but you’re so right! Sometimes in our attempt to do something differently, we abandon what is working. Kind of like the phrase: “don’t throw the baby out with the bath water.”

    Great stuff Jonathan!

    1. Yeah. That sums it up well.
