‘Therefore’ Is Where the Action Happens

The word “therefore” has to be the most ignored word in the Bible.

You see, the word “therefore” is often used to transition from a teaching to an action.

After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. Therefore encourage one another with these words. – 1 Thessalonians 4:17-18

Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, – Matthew 28:18-19

But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. – Matthew 6:33-34

What we often do is read the teaching, go on to the command, and forget that it’s something that WE have to do.

And so we read, teach, hear, and learn the same principles time and time again but never put them into practice. The teaching is important, but the “therefore” is the key. It’s where our behavior happens.

The world is changed in the “therefore.”

  • People’s eternities are changed in the “therefore.”
  • Hope is restored in the “therefore.”
  • Families are healed in the “therefore.”
  • Joy regardless of circumstance is found in the “therefore.”

So, let’s ask ourselves this question….

How’s my “therefore”?
That’s what I’m thinkin about today.

turn the world UPSIDE down.

I’m Learning to Slow Down

I’m trying to learn to slow down.

I’m learning that I often do a lot of things, but few things well.

Instead, I run around,
thing to thing,
task to task.

The result is,
I accomplish a lot of “tasks” but have very little impact.

So,

I’m learning to slow down.

What are you learning?

3 Life Lessons From Angry Birds

1. If you really believe in something, you’ll give your life to see it accomplished.

For those of you that have never played Angry Birds (where ya been?), the goal of the game is to shoot birds out of a sling shot and kill pigs that have buried themselves under random structures. The premise behind the game is that the pigs took the birds’ eggs. This kinda ticked the birds off and so they’re out to rectify it. They believe in their mission. They know what they want to see happen, they have an intense desire to see it happen, and they’re willing to do anything to make it happen. If you’re not living your life on the foundation of something you’d be willing to give everything for, you’re living a rather meaningless life.

2. Use what you have, the best you can.

I still have no idea why the birds don’t just fly over and take back what’s theirs, but apparently they can’t. So the birds use what they have (a slingshot and themselves) to accomplish their mission. They don’t just give up because they don’t have exactly the right tools, they use what they have. It’s that important to them. Never make excuses about what you’re missing, use what’s present.

3. Know your enemy.

Imagine if the birds, instead of attacking the pigs, begun to fight amongst themselves. It’d be pointless and they’d never get their little eggs back. Instead, they know that their enemy is the pigs and they give it all they got (why don’t they just fly?!) to attack the pigs. Christians need to learn this. We often fight hard against someone who believes a little different and lose sight of the real Enemy… The Enemy is real. Instead of forming a team to kick hell in, we fight against the church down the street because they do church a little differently or have a different denominational title under their name. It’s time we open our eyes to the fact that we have bigger and more urgent battles to fight.

Ok, those are my 3. What else can we learn from these little, stinkin, and addictive birds?

Life Is Like A Game of Bop It

Do you remember the hand held game “Bop It”?

I loved playing Bop It as a kid.
In fact, I think it’s still around (yeah, its that good!).

In Bop It, the goal is to repeat a set of commands given in the game. – pull it, twist it, bop it.

As the little thing gives you a command, you have to perform the action it commands. The commands get quicker and quicker until eventually, you’re certain to perform the wrong action.

I think a lot of us live life like I used to play Bop It.

We have so many things going on in our lives that our goal becomes just not taking a fatal step and performing the wrong action at the wrong time. Sure, we’re able to keep up for periods of time, but eventually it all comes crashing to a halt at the wrong action.

God never intended your life to be a game of Bop It.

God gifted, equipped, and called you to a specific purpose.

When we begin to try to do everything and keep up with others’ demands, we begin playing a life of keeping up rather than a life of effectiveness.

We begin to tire out from all of the extra stuff and lose energy for the God stuff.

Whatever God’s called us to do, its important that we make a concentrated effort to do it…
Not to do everything…
Not to do what others think we should.

Live the specific calling God’s given you before you undoubtedly make the wrong move and hear the words “game over”.

What was a favorite game of your childhood?
