What Will They Write?

Mark 3:16-19

These are the twelve he appointed: Simon (to whom he gave the name Peter James son of Zebedee and his brother John (to them he gave the name Boanerges, which means Sons of Thunder); Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.

It’s natural for us to remember someone for one thing that they have done in their life…
Good or Bad.

Often times, our lives become known for one defining moment that occured during our time.

Reading this excerpt from Mark 3, I can’t help but think about the few words that follow many of the disciples’ names.

Simon (who Jesus called “Peter”)
James and John (known as the “Sons of Thunder”)
Judas (who betrayed Jesus)

When people describe you, how do they see you?

When you are no longer living your life, what will people remember?

What will be written of you?

Will they see you as someone like Peter, who when Jesus changed, it was an obvious transformation?
Will they see you like James and John, who when Jesus called, they left everything (including their father) to follow Him?
Will they see Judas, who would betray Jesus and deliver Him for His execution?

I never want to have the term “betrayer” attached to my name.
Instead, I want people to see my bold faith.
To see that Jesus changed me forever when He got control of my life.

What will you be known for?

I have no clue what people would write… I would guess different people would have something different to say about me (good & bad).

I strive to be one who reflects Jesus… but I often fail.

Jonathan – great post as always! I think of this all the time. I’ve also asked the young women in my mentoring group the same thing. When you go full circle you also have to think about how the Lord will view what we did with the time we had on earth…
With the second half of the year upon us, I’m reviewing the first half of the year and planning for the second half. I want to be remembered as using my time strategically for God!

Echoing Duane, man was that a sobering post. I too would never want to have a label ‘betrayer’ next to my name but if I’m honest, too often I don’t spend enough hanging out with Jesus to even warrant a mention.
