Do What You Need to Do

We’ve all been there…

Times when we knew what we were supposed to do,
but had so much trouble actually doing it.

Times when we knew how we should handle a situation,
but also knew what would be more profitable for us.

Times when we knew that we were crossing a line,
but wanted what was on the other side so bad,
we decided it didn’t matter.

No matter how dedicated you are to your faith,
how old you are,
how many times you’ve been there,
it can still be difficult…

Very difficult!

It’s been a problem that’s been going on since the beginning of Creation…

Eve knew that she shouldn’t eat from the tree,
but what it offered looked so much better than what she had.

The Israelites knew that they were supposed to be dedicate to the True God,
but what the false “gods” offered looked more appealing.

David knew that the adultery that he was about to commit would hurt him big time,
but immediate satisfaction seemed more desirable at the time.

Peter knew that Jesus was the Messiah,
but the fear of what would happened if he admitted to following seemed too big for him to be faithful.

Paul even dealt with this problem…
Romans 7:15 says, “I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.”

I don’t mention all of these examples so that we’ll feel better the next time we cross an obvious line.

I make these mentions to show you that WE can be different.

We can make the right choice today.
We can choose the right over the easy.
We can choose the godly over immediate satisfaction.
We can choose faithfulness over selfishness.

  1. On the surface, this seems like an unattainable goal… To be different. To be faithful. To be godly. And I’ve tried everything I can think of to attain the unattainable goal of faithfulness. When I’m faced with temptation, I try 47 different ways to talk myself out of giving in to it. And you know what? those 47 different ways only work occasionally. So, what do I do? Just give in? No. The only thing that REALLY, REALLY works for me is getting so invested into my relationship with Christ that it actually HURTS me to think about my sin hurting Him. (I’m not saying this will work for everybody else. But it’s what I’ve found works for me.)

    1. I think that’s the ONLY thing that will really work for any of us. Thanks for sharing that! Powerful stuff!

  2. Those are the worst ones. The ones that aren’t huge neon flashing sins… the more subtle ones. The ones that kinda give you a bellyache but you try to reason out why you should be ok to do it anyways.

I’m terrible about this. I try avoidance first. Until I get a firm lockdown on myself, I avoid my temptation areas like the plague. But prayer is really the only thing that helps me to pull back. I am weak. He is strong.

  3. I just started following you on Twitter…then I saw you post a link to this. The Last four lines of this post is what got to me (I feel like I’m a ” common man” on a journey to a uncommon faith to). Thank you for saying this!

By the way, a friend of mine and I started a “Facbook-like” sight for people in ministry called SoulAnchor. I ‘d love for you to be a part of it! (thesoulanchor.ning.com)
