Sometimes we look or think about a verse like this and think that God has a duty to be our God. We look at it and take it for granted that we are His people.
Truth is, we have to be His people or we die! We have to be one of His people or we live without a Savior and die and go to hell. We have to have His common grace to live and we have to have His saving grace to die.
While we have to have it, we can’t earn it! It can’t be because of anything we do, it’s all about Him.
The temptation for a lot of us is to think that God is obligated to allow us to be His people. The truth…He allows us to be His people.
It’s like a child who needs food, diapers, a roof, and clothing, but could never earn it on their own. We are as dependent on our Heavenly Father as a child is to their earthly father. We have to have something, but we can’t get it without Him.
Don’t think God owes you grace. Accept that you are nothing without Him, and then live like you believe it!
